Hands off my mobile apps!

When it comes to monetisation of mobile applications, developers are still faced with the complexities of the app space and having to navigate the diversity of payment methods available for their apps. Unfortunately it is not as easy as developing the app, integrating a billing solution and hope things will work. There are many mobile components that [...]

Is Apple going soft?

Why are they relaxing their policies? It has long been the understanding that Apple wants every single slice of the pie. Their devices are so closed that the only way to get anything is via their all conquering app store. Everything from music, movies and the latest TV shows to humble ring tones need to [...]

Android is taking a slice of the Apple pie

The gap is narrowing…rapidly As much as I agree with the common view that Apple has created one of the most innovative mobile devices, the iPhone, and is widely credited forhelping drive the uptake of the mobile internet worldwide, I’m actually the proud owner of an Android phone – HTC Desire and there are many reasons [...]

Nokia Ovi Disappoints

It never ceases to amaze me how Nokia excel at providing disappointing user experiences. They clearly don’t do it to irritate their customers on purpose so I have to assume they are just lazy or inept. I received an “Ovi Store Weekly” email today and had a quick look at the apps they are promoting. Usually [...]

So Apple has done it again, what about user choice?!

Another ban by Apple, another headache for developers wanting to generate revenue on this platform. Apple creates some great products BUT their main brand value seems to be: Restriction of user choice. In contrast Bango’s number one key brand value is “choice” so we can’t support Apple’s Stalinist view.

Don’t put your ‘apps’ in one basket

The recent decision by Apple to ban some apps from its iTunes App store is further proof of the tight controls and restrictions that currently exist for developers. As we know, developers already face big fragmentation issues in the market and distribution restrictions continue to be a challenge for them.

Mobile World Congress highlights…

Were you at Mobile World Congress this year? With this year’s show now done and dusted, here are some of the key highlights of the show…enjoy!   Eyebrow raised: Vittorio Colao had a moan about Google’s search dominance. Vodafone, of course, entered into the first ever global carrier deal with Google three years ago, giving [...]

App store New Year resolution…

…lose some weight and get a better tape measure… Don’t get me wrong, I love apps. They have done much to accelerate the uptake and advancement of smartphones which in turn continually improves mobile web browsing capabilities – hurrah! Apps are starting to shake up the whole industry – they are creating a strong device [...]

Payment experience on the Nokia Ovi store – where’s operator billing?

Like many, we eagerly awaited the new Nokia Ovi store to see what was available and how easy it was to buy paid-for apps. The store did seem to be packed with free apps, mostly in the entertainment genre which is not surprising given Nokia’s penetration of the mass market. Business Week commented this week [...]

Could the Apple App Store overtake the Crazy Frog?

The Apple App Store seems to be on the same track as the Crazy Frog. Although Apple is very secretive, the App Store may be managing to achieve similar sales growth over its first year or so. While Apple’s sales are a tiny part of the overall multi-billion dollar mobile app and content market, since it is restricted to 20 million or so iPhones/iTouches it has captured the imagination of journalists and the technorati. It has re-invigorated interest in app stores among other phone makers and even breathed some life into operator portals.
